Characteristic Dorsal rays XIII-XIV, 11-13(usually 12); Anal rays II, 10-11; pectoral rays 18-20; lateral-line scales 17-19; body depth 1.8-2.0 in standard length. Posterior tip of dorsal fin rounded. 2 spinous procurrent rays on upper and lower orgins of caudal fin. Body brownish grey; dorsal and anal dark; pectoral fin pale with a prominent black spot at the base; caudal fin yellowish grey.
habitats Inhabits lagoon and outer coral reefs from 10 to 40m depth, boulder bottoms and lava cliffs, in small to large aggregations.  
Distribution Distributed in the western Pacific, there are two isolated populations: (1) southern Japan, Ryukyu Islands, and Taiwan; (2) Coral Sea, New Caledonia, Loyalty Islands, Lord Howe Island and east coast of Australia between Sydney and the southern Great Barri
